Coming into the season, Kansas City Christian’s Johnny Goodwin was still haunted by last year’s state tournament. Goodwin won the Class 3-2-1A state title his freshman season, but finished second last year behind Jake Norman of Wichita Independent who went undefeated.
Goodwin responded with a perfect 30-0 season which he capped off with a Kansas Class 3-2-1A state title on Saturday at Goddard High School.
“I was really bummed after last year but it is good to come back,” Goodwin said. “I played a lot better and was able to win the state title again.”
He became the second in his family to win two state championships following his sister Sara who won the title in 2011 and 2012. She was also undefeated for her second title.
“My sister did it so naturally my coach had given me a hard time about not doing it yet,” Goodwin said. “It was a really good season.”
Goodwin’s victory also helped the Panthers capture their first team title in school history.
